Journal #4, now due 2/28

Journal #4 is about the concept of “intersectionality” as discussed by Collins, and white supremacy as discussed by Smith.

Summary:

  • In your own words, explain Collins’ framework of oppression. What is the goal of her piece? What does she want us to understand about the relationship between race, class, and gender?
  • In your own words, what is Smith’s framework of the three pillars of white supremacy? What is their relationship to one another? What is the role of heteropatriarchy here (and what does this term mean)?

Connection to course material:

Here you can reflect on any of the following (or your own connections– you do not have to follow these prompts):

  • What did the class discussion about intersectionality show you? What did you learn? What questions do you still have?
  • Go back to Mills’ and his concept of the sociological imagination, the relationship between personal biography and social history. What do you think Collins and/or Smith would have to say about Mills’ concept? What might they agree with and what might they add or change to his conception?

Connection to world:

  • Is intersectionality a useful concept? What can help us to see (or not see) about current events?
  • What do you think about the tensions that Smith raises in her piece, about problems that come up among communities of color? Can you think of an example of a conflict that you have witnessed or experienced, and how might her framework help us to understand this conflict?
